To Save His Season, Starlin Castro Better Beg To See More Curveballs

We’re entering July. Up to 162 hitters would, as of this writing, qualify for the batting title with at least 3.1 PA per game. Do you know how many of those 162 players have currently a negative WAR? Ten of them. Do you know how many of those ten have under a minus-one WAR? Two of them. One of them (Yonder Alonso) is no longer part of an MLB roster. The other one, well, he is Starlin Castro and he should supposedly be one of Miami’s best players. Ugh.

Temporary Bauer Outage?

Trevor Bauer finally broke out in 2018, posting career highs across the board before his season was cut short due to a stress fracture in his right ankle. Bauer would have likely won the Cy Young Award were it not for this injury. Due to this massive breakout, he entered the 2019 MLB season with high expectations, with many analysts forecasting another dominant season. I had Bauer as my 2019 American League Cy Young pick. Deep Dive: Justin Smoak

Justin Smoak broke out a bit in 2017, hitting .270 with 38 home runs and 90 RBI. His wRC+ was a solid 133, and he looked like a guy that could be a dependable, if not exciting, option at first base for fantasy in 2018. However, he slowed a bit in 2018 instead, hitting only .242 with 25 home runs and 77 RBI. His wRC+ fell to 121, still okay but not what you wanted from a back end first baseman or corner infielder. So what happened to Smoak? Is he doomed to be just another mediocre first base option, or is there more in that bat? Continue reading
