New York Jets Draft Review

Draft Review: Mekhi Becton

Givanni Damico | April 29th, 2020

Joe Douglas went into this draft with something to prove. There were a lot of different routes that the Jets could have gone, but I think, for the most part, they took the correct route. Let’s get into it.

Make sure to check out all of our other NFL team drafts reviews here.

Round 1, Pick 11: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville

I wasn’t a huge fan of Becton. He was my OT4, but the more I think about this pick, the more I like it. Becton has all the potential in the world to develop into one of the league’s most dominant tackles. In my mind, the Jets aren’t in “win now” mode yet. They aren’t quite ready. But this is a make-or-break season for Sam Darnold as the future of this franchise and it will be a great year for Becton to develop. I think I still would have went with Tristan Wirfs here, though.

Grade: B+

Round 2, Pick 59: Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor

We all know that Sam Darnold needs weapons if he wants any chance of doing well. Mims doesn’t have fantastic play speed, but he has good body control. His hands are questionable at times but he is a developable prospect who is a surprisingly good blocker. He will make an immediate impact in this Jets’ offense and hopefully be a part of this franchise for years to come.

Grade: A

Round 3, Pick 68: Ashtyn Davis, SAF, California

You do not want to get me started on my Davis draft crush. I love this guy. He is such a great athlete who doesn’t really struggle in any specific area of the game. I see him as a potential Marcus Maye replacement. He has fantastic ball skills and is an extremely hard hitter as well. I love this pick. Easily my favorite pick of the entire draft for any team.

Grade: A+

Round 3, Pick 79: Jabari Zuniga, EDGE, Florida

I love Zuniga, but he is a boom-or-bust player. His college career was plagued with injuries, but he does have great physical tools that can be developed. If he can stay on the field, he will make an impact for this franchise.

Grade: B

Round 4, Pick 120: Lamical Perine, RB, Florida

This pick didn’t make much sense to me. It was a little early for Perine to go off the board, and running back wasn’t a huge need for the Jets. He’s a power back who can be a solid backup for Bell, but there was definitely better value on the board.

Grade: C+

Round 4, Pick 125: James Morgan, QB, FIU

Another questionable pick here. If the Jets wanted a backup quarterback, Jake Fromm certainly would have been the better pick here. I think Douglas should have looked for a guy who can make some sort of impact on this team within the next four years, not a guy who rides the bench behind Darnold.

Grade: D+

Round 4, Pick 129: Cameron Clark, IOL, Charlotte

Clark is yet another guy that I loved throughout the draft process. He held his own against the Clemson Tigers as a small school tackle (will play guard at the next level). He’s an absolutely fantastic run blocker with great power. My only concern is he lacks a bit of discipline when it comes to penalties. I see him as the replacement to Brian Winters, who should be a cap casualty.

Grade: A-

Round 5, Pick 158: Bryce Hall, CB, Virginia

This was an unprecedented fall due to injury. Bryce Hall is a great press corner and a good athlete. He’s a player that I would stash for a year, let him fully recover from any injury, and then let him play in 2021. The value here was absolutely fantastic.

Grade: A+

Round 6, Pick 191: Braden Mann, P, Texas A&M

Mann was arguably the best punter in the class and should undoubtedly replace Lachlan Edwards. Mann averaged 49 yards per punt in college and was extremely consistent. Some may argue that a specialist isn’t worth the pick, but I couldn’t disagree more.

Grade: B+

For the most part, I thought the Jets did well. My only concern is that they took a lot of boom-or-bust players who may not pan out. There were safer picks that could have been made, but Douglas bet on the boom. Lamical Perine and James Morgan were head scratchers for me, but I loved the Clark, Zuniga, and Davis picks.

Overall Grade: B+
