Simply inexcusable. The Miami Heat had a chance to back up Saturday’s home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers with a road win. They were on their way to doing that with a 22 point lead heading into the fourth period. But then, they lost the fourth quarter and eventually lost the game in Overtime. Now, Miami finds itself 13-18 on the road and only 1/2 game up over the Philadelphia 76ers for the fourth seed.
Here are my takeaways from Monday’s loss.
Ugly Fourth Quarter
This is where the game was lost. Entering the fourth period, the Heat were in control with a huge lead. But then, with a 32-5 run, the Cavaliers pick up their first lead of the game. Leading the Cavaliers’ fourth quarter surge were Tristan Thompson and Larry Nance Jr. The two bigs feasted on the Heat in the paint.
The Heat was able to force overtime but the Cavaliers ended the night with a win. This was one of the worst collapses I’ve ever seen from the Heat. They went scoring so easily with ball movement to jacking up shot attempts.
Road Woes continue
Make that 1-6 in their last seven road games. As said before, the Heat are a different team on the road. Their defense is not as good and they struggle offensively in the most important stretches of the game. Miami needs to find a way to play better consistently on the road.
The good news is eight of their next 10 games are at home.
Duncan joins 200 club
With his second three-pointer, Duncan Robinson reached 200 threes for the season, joining Damian Lillard, James Harden, and Buddy Hield as players to reach the mark. The Heat’s sharpshooter shot 5-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half.
However, he got cold in the second half. After making his first five three-point attempts, Robinson missed his final six attempts in the second half.
Next up: The Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Game tips off at 7:30PMET
