On what was a special night, the Miami Heat came out victorious over the shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers. The Heat opened the game on an 11-2 run converting their first four attempts. After leading by single digits in the first period, the Heat pushed their lead to 30 by halftime. From there, they never looked back. Miami is now 23-3 at home.
Here are my takeaways from the Heat’s win over the Cavaliers.
Wade’s jersey retirement
It’s official. Number 3 is now raised on the rafters alongside other Heat legends. No other player will ever wear the number again. Dwyane Wade becomes the fifth Heat player to have his jersey retired, alongside Chris Bosh, Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning, and Tim Hardaway.
It’s been a memorable and eventful weekend for Wade. His new documentary “Life Unexpected” will debut on Sunday. On Friday, the Heat hosted a Legacy celebration for him with former teammates and coaches honoring him.
Nunn steps up
On a night one Chicago guard gets honored, another Chicago guard steps up. With Jimmy Butler out, Kendrick Nunn led the team in scoring. Nunn finished with 24 points and eight assists on seven of twelve shooting. He also shot four of seven from beyond the three-point arc.
It appears the all-star break was good for him. After a couple of rough performances heading into the All-star break, Nunn is now looking like the player he was earlier this season. Hopefully, he can keep it up.
Home sweet home
The Heat are a different team at home. And they again showed why on Saturday. Despite being shorthanded, the team erupted for 82 first-half points, shooting 76.9 percent from the floor and 60 percent from three with a 30-point lead. Cleveland had no answers for the Heat’s offense.
The problem, however, has been on the road. Miami has been playing mediocre away from Miami. The Heat just came off a six-game road trip with a 1-5 record. After Saturday’s game, they’ll get another at improving their road record against Cleveland on Monday.
Next up: Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. Game tips off at 7pm eastern time.
