Cleveland Browns Top Head Coach/GM Candidates

Daniel Corrigan | January 2nd, 2020

Welp, it is the end of the 2019 NFL regular season and once again the Browns are looking for a new head coach and GM, again.

The Browns came into the season with high expectations due to the phenomenal rookie season for Baker Mayfield and the acquisition of mega-star Odell Beckham Jr.

Instead, first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens led the team to a 6-10 record and was fired just hours after the week 17 loss to the one (now two) win Bengals. GM John Dorsey and the Browns parted ways after the Haslams wanted Dorsey to have a diminished role within the organization.

So what are the options for the Browns? Do you go with the experienced head coach? or the young, upcoming coordinator from various teams? And what about your new GM?

Head Coach Candidates (In No Order)

1.) Josh McDaniels

It just would not be a Browns coach hunt without McDaniels name. I know I have wanted him for a long time and I want him now. He was rumored to want the Patriots to trade up for Mayfield, he is young, he is from North East Ohio, he has worked with Tom Brady, he is the guy.

2.) Mike McCarthy

Speaking of coaches who have worked with an all-time great QB, McCarthy was the coach for all of Aaron Rodgers‘ career. He has won a Super Bowl, and has been reportedly put together a staff and spent the last year planning about his next coaching job.

3.) Greg Roman

The OC for the Ravens would be an interesting hire. He worked in San Francisco with Colin Kaepernick and now Lamar Jackson with the Ravens. Mayfield does not really fit that mold, but it could be interesting to bring that creativity to a young offense.

4.) Robert Saleh

The high-energy DC in San Francisco is going to be a hot-candidate for head coaching jobs. San Francisco has one of the best defenses in the league, that may be due to all the talent they have, but it’s obvious that his players love him.

5.) Lincoln Riley

It makes so much sense, but Riley does not want to leave Oklahoma. He was the coach during Mayfield’s Heisman Trophy season, has had tremendous success with every QB he has had and is young and offensively a genius. This is a dream scenario, but it won’t happen.

6.) Urban Meyer

No.

GM Candidates

1.) Nick Caserio

Caserio is the current director of player personnel for the New England Patriots. He is also a North East Ohio man. He even played college football at John Carroll with McDaniels. It is rumored that McDaniels wants his own GM. If he gets the job, he might bring Caserio with him.

2.) Dave Ziegler

Speaking of former McDaniels’ John Carroll teammates in the Patriots front office, Ziegler is also a name floating around. The director of Pro Scouting for the Patriots is known for his understanding of a player’s strengths and weaknesses. If McDaniels gets the job, he may also bring over Ziegler.

3.) Paul DePodesta

DePodesta is the Cheif Strategy Officer for the Cleveland Browns. You may remember him as being the analytical genius for the Oakland A’s in the movie “Moneyball” (The guy Jonah Hill played.) It seems that the Haslams trust DePodesta a lot, as evident to the firing of Dorsey. He may not get the official GM title, but he may have the most control over the team.

4.) Andrew Berry

Berry is the current Vice President of Football Operations for the Eagles. He did work in the Browns front office from 2016-2018 as the Vice President of Player Personnel. He is an analytics guy and a Harvard graduate and maybe a preferred choice if DePodesta is leading the charge.
