Erling Håland is one of the most sought after young talents in the game. At the age of only 19, the Norwegian striker has the potential to be really something special. Håland was being looked at by European giants like Manchester United, RB Leipzig, and Juventus, but in the end, the winner of the Erling Håland lottery goes to the Bundesliga’s Borussia Dortmund. Håland signed a deal worth 20 million euros that will keep the young striker at Dortmund for four years until 2024.
Man U Missing Out
Manchester United lost out on another big signing this offseason after losing out on the Mario Mandzukic lottery as discussed earlier in the week. What can be even more worrisome for the United squad is that with the signing of Håland, the German squad may be settling in with the squad they have and less likely to move their other young star Jadon Sancho, whom United was also targeting for this transfer period. Manchester United had their chance at signing the Norwegian youngster but could not come to terms with some of the specifics of what was being asked. One of these specifics was that of the share of future sales profits with Håland’s father former soccer player Alfie Håland, as well as his advisor Mino Raiola. Manchester United also was not inclined to accept the request of a buyout clause added into the contract, with these details not being agreed upon they gave up on the signing of Håland.
Boost for Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund has discovered a gem here and added help to their striker position for now and the future which was one of the German club’s biggest needs going forward. Going into the winter break Dortmund is fourth place in the Bundesliga with 30 points on the season, seven points behind the leading club RB Leipzig, who rumors tied to potentially signing Håland as well. Håland will bolster the German club’s offense immensely and come in just in time as well to help in their attempt at upsetting one of this year’s favorites in the Champions League during the round of 16, Paris Saint-Germain. Looking at things optimistically for them in that matchup, the young striker has had recent success in Champions League play.
Erling Håland came from Red Bull Salzburg which he signed with last January coming from originally the Norweigan league. RB Salzburg this season got a chance to play in the group stages of the Champions League, an opportunity they haven’t had since 1994 when they were Casino Salzburg. Salzburg got placed in a tough group having to match against Napoli and Liverpool as well as Genk. Salzburg secured seven points in their third-place finish in the group, in which Håland scored eight goals in their six matches played! He is in pristine form as over the past year Håland has appeared in 22 matches for RB Salzburg (between league and international club play) and has scored 28 goals over that span.
The Bundesliga returns on January 17th, in which Dortmund has a three-game span of teams at the bottom of the table to pick up some ground in the standings and get Håland game experience with the club before their February matchup against PSG in the Champions League.
