It was a very convincing showing for Martin Truex Jr., taking over the lead from Denny Hamlin during the first wave of pit stops and not relinquishing it from there on out. In dominating fashion, Truex would lead 464 of the race’s 500 laps, if there was one driver that had at least a little something for the nineteen it would be William Byron.
As the race hit the final stage, Byron was able to weed his way through the front of the pack at which point he was able to cut down a lot of the lead built up by Truex. However as the last number of laps clicked off, it was obvious the 24 car just didn’t seem to have enough to make the pass. Had Byron won it would have indeed been a great accomplishment, as it would have been his first-ever win in the Series.
As Truex Jr. was being interviewed post-race, there was an altercation that had apparently broken out between both Logano and Hamlin in the pits. This had all stemmed from an on-track incident earlier with the two drivers, in which it looked as though Hamlin would pinch the twenty-two against the wall.
Logano would try and keep the car together but would end up needing repairs, after spinning out in the middle of the track after a cut tire. For the second week in a row, the pit crew came through with flying colors saving their driver from near points disaster.
As it stands with the points situation Hamlin, Busch and Logano are currently at the top of the cut of line. Harvick, Blaney, Larson, and Chase Elliott are all on the outside looking in, Elliott is in the worst predicament by far at the moment minus 44 points.
A broken axel would cost him a number of laps, as the crews from the other Hendricks teams would need to pitch in to help get him back out as fast as they could. Elliott needs to most likely win one of the next two races if he expects to make Homestead.
The second race of the round of eight begins next Sunday at Texas Motorspeedway. Look for Harvick to be one of the drivers to watch, in the last four races at Texas he has finished second or better on three of those occasions.
