Denny Hamlin Wraps Up Round Of 12 With Kansas Win

Dale Money | October 21st, 2019

It took two overtime restarts to get finished, but Denny Hamlin would manage to come through with a toughly fought win edging out Chase Elliot. Hamlin would get a nice assist from teammate Kyle Busch to get him the lead he needed in the final green white. Busch, Kurt Busch, William Byron, Martin Truex Jr, Eric Jones, Clint Bowyer, Harvick, and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top 10. Elliot manages to qualify for the round of eight after just managing to beat out Brad Keselowski by three points.

Elliot would come into the race with a 22 point deficit and needed a heck of a lot to go his way along with a very solid performance from himself. He would certainly have the car to give him a chance to qualify, picking up 15 points through the first two stages. Keselowski looked likely to get the last spot, however a torn-up tire by his Penske teammate Ryan Blaney would throw everything into confusion.

After that happened they would have two yellow flags and two overtimes before everything was settled. The second overtime caused after a wreck including another teammate of Keselowski’s in Joey Logano ended up being the worst thing that could have happened to him. He would start off thirteenth in the second overtime, nursing a three-point lead on Elliot but was bottled up and would end up dropping six spots by the end of the race.

Not a lot went right for Keselowski most of the day, he would struggle with a pretty tight car for a good chunk of the race. Outside of picking up five points in stage one he was stuck around the top 15 and would struggle to keep his position, and at one point would be lapped by Hamlin and was racing far back as 19th.

Elliot will carry the flag for the Hendricks garage, as both Alex Bowman and William Byron were eliminated in the round of 12. Bowyer and Keselowski join them as the four drivers not advancing. Going into the round of eight, the qualified drivers include K. Busch, Kevin Harvick, Truex Jr, Logano, Hamlin, Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Elliot. The round of eight begins next week when we go to another tough short track, Martinsville Speedway.
