With offers from just Elon, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Samford, and Liberty Antonio Gandy-Golden would choose to attend the latter and help a program on the rise take that next step. He would enter college with a big 6’4” frame but only weighed 195 pounds according to Max Preps as he walked on campus.
So what does he do? He shows his strong work ethic, that any gymnast must have, and worked his way up to add nearly thirty pounds to his frame.
Now at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and a new body build to boot, he faced this new challenge head-on with a successful freshman year that saw him catch 21 passes, 315 yards and he even found the endzone three times. However, the fun was just beginning for Gandy-Golden though because he was about to go off.
He had his first taste of great football production starting in his sophomore year and followed that up with a strong Junior year as well. In those two years, he accumulated a total of 140 catches, 2,103 yards, and a whopping 20 touchdowns. He was named to a member of the Big South’s First Team All-Conference Team in 2017 before Liberty became an independent in 2018.
So with his name on the minds of draft analysts, like Thor, the question was how would he respond to this new hype? He had a new Head Coach in Hugh Freeze who had Liberty on the national radar but could he capitalize? We wouldn’t have to wait long to find out.
Week One saw Liberty facing off against Syracuse at home. Syracuse has one of the better defenses in all the ACC and is a very well-coached team by Dino Babers, well none of that mattered. Gandy-Golden would have six receptions for 119 yards against a stellar Syracuse defense, at least so we thought going into the year. Regardless, the tone was set for what has been a strong senior campaign for the standout receiver.
To this point through five games, he is on pace to finish with 65 receptions, 1,623 yards, and an impressive 12 touchdowns. He is not getting the love he deserves because those are Biletnikoff type stats so by seasons end he may just force his way into that conversation.
With his athletic background bundled with a fantastic 6’4” 225-pound frame, he should be an absolute draft darling by the time the draft enters Las Vegas in April.
The best part is that Antonio Gandy-Golden may be the one exception to the rule of what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas because as we have seen there is not much success in stopping this young man.
