RFA Report: Charlie McAvoy

Dom Lunardo | September 19th, 2019

After bursting onto the scene in October 2017, Charlie McAvoy and the Boston Bruins were on the clock as training camps from across the NHL kicked off. The 21-year old, smooth-skating defenseman was one of four high profile restricted free agent blue-liners this summer, joining teammate, Brandon Carlo, and the likes of Zach Werenski and Ivan Provorov. It took a few months, but McAvoy and the Bruins reached a 3-year/$14.7M contract extension.

Team: Boston Bruins

Career Statistics: 117 GP – 14 Goals – 46 Assists – 60 Points – +34 +/-

Contract: Term: 3 Years – Average Annual Value – $4.9M Total – $14.7M

Instant Analysis: Right off the bat, this is a bargain deal for the Bruins hockey club and a generous “bridge” deal for one of the finest young defenceman in the NHL. Like all negotiations that go through the Bruins front office, the contract for Charlie McAvoy is no different. Boston GM Don Sweeney confidently draws a line in the sand, and places the onus on the player to sign, especially for pending RFAs like McAvoy. It’s just the way business is conducted in Beantown. As a core piece to go along with Patrice Bergeron, Torey Krug, Brad Marchand, David Krejci, and Tuukka Rask this is a very well-constructed deal for both the team and player that the Bruins faithful should be extremely pleased with.

Projected Stats in 2019/20:  9 goals – 32 assists – 41 points

With the infusion of youth in the Bruins lineup, it seems only fitting that McAvoy will eclipse the 40-point plateau in 2019/20. The Bruins possess a lethal power play and high octane offense which should bode well for the likes of McAvoy and the B’s who fell one game short of hoisting Lord Stanley last May at the hands of the St. Louis Blues. With the “lessening of the workload” for the aging, Zdeno Chara, McAvoy along with Brandon Carlo, Matt Grzelcyk, and Torey Krug should get prime time minutes on a deep and talented Bruins D-core in 2019/20.
