MLB DFS 5/18 – Moneyball Plays

Devin Davis| May 18th, 2019

Saturday is poised to have a full slate of baseball spanning from the early afternoon to the wee hours of the night. In order to help you prepare for the seven-game night slate, let’s break down the players that will put some money in your pocket.

Pitcher

Jon Lester CHC ($9,200 on DK and $9,300 on FD)

This pitching slate is brutal and there are not many options that I am willing to pay up for (see Berrios’s start on Monday) or values that are in a good spot. That leaves the trusted Jon Lester to take the mound for us. With a league-leading 1.16 ERA, Lester has been lights out since the calendar turned to May, and it’s time to ride the hot hand against the Washington Nationals that have a 26% strikeout rate.

DK SP2: Corbin Martin HOU ($7,200)

Infield

3B Alex Bregman HOU ($5,600 on DK and $4,300 on FD)

The Houston Astros in Fenway against Hector Velasquez?? Sign me up. Obviously, the price tag for this stack is ridiculous, so we have to be very selective in our exposure. Bregman provides more remaining salary than George Springer and, with a .309 ISO, is in a nice spot to launch a dinger.

1B C.J. Cron MIN ($4,100 on DK and $3,500 on FD)

Cron has continued to uphold his reputation as a power slugger in his move to Minnesota. Tonight, he is poised to rake against Wade Leblanc who is returning in his first start coming off the IL. With a .245 ISO and 34.9% hard-hit rate, a blast over the walls in T-Mobile Park is looking very likely.

C Jason Castro MIN ($3,900 on DK and $3,200 on FD)

Castro has picked up where Mitch Garver left off and has found his power stroke lately with all seven home runs coming in his past 12 games. The same logic applies to Garver when looking at the matchup against Leblanc. A Twins stack is a play I would highly recommend tonight.

Outfield

OF Shohei Ohtani LAA ($4,400 on DK and $3,600 on FD)

The Angels are facing the struggling Jake Junis tonight and are poised to continue their success at the plate. Junis has struggled this year and owns a 4.63 xFIP. Although Ohtani has yet to find his groove, he has improved on his hard contact rate and exit velocity this season. He is in a great spot at a good price and is in a prime position.

DK only: 1B/OF Marwin Gonzalez MIN ($3,400 on DK)

Riding with my theme of a Twins stack, I am going to playing a terrific value play in Marwin Gonzalez. While he does not provide a high ceiling, the guaranteed floor he ensures at his cheap price tag is a must play. He has successfully reached base in each of his previous fourteen games and should keep that streak going tonight against LeBlanc.
